Abaqus Plate Centre Hole Investigation

Application of Abaqus to a finite element analysis problem – flat plate with a centre hole and applied point load on one edge of 2.6 kN. Two plane stress elements (CPS4 and CPS8) were compared.

Abaqus results of plane, shear and principle stresses in the plate were extracted, analysed and displayed graphically.

The errors from abaqus are found at the end nodes of the plate where plane stress should be zero. Due to how abaqus calculates stresses (Gaussian quadrature).

Increase in accuracy from CPS4 to CPS8 quad elements due to the increase in 4 to 8 nodes, linearly and quadrilateral interpolated respectively.
